The Spartans defeat Tallwood 9-4 in season opener.

Nick Castrello drove in three runs, sparking the Spartans to a 9-4 victory in seven innings over the Tallwood Lions in non-league action on Tuesday at Tallwood (VA) High School.  He singled in the fourth and seventh innings.

Tallwood's lineup had no answer for Shane Krawec. Krawec held Tallwood hitless over 2 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out three.

Brandon Breen got the win for the Spartans. He allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out three, walked six and surrendered five hits.

The Spartans stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring one run on an RBI single by Breen.

Four runs in the bottom of the fifth helped Tallwood close its deficit to 5-4. A walk by Jamal Bullard and a three-run double by Grayson Lamb triggered Tallwood's comeback. Krawec ended the inning by getting Jacob Debevic to strike out.

The Spartans matched their two-run sixth inning with two more in the seventh. In the sixth, the Spartans scored on a two-run inside-the-park home run by Tyler Harrig, plating Nick Castrello.
